What is sin?
In recovery, many of us discover that sin is simply a measure of a character defects and it’s these character defects that depart us from healthy relationships with others and ourselves. The chief activator of our defects has been self-centered fear. When things don’t go our way, we act out to the detriment of all concerned. One of the best ways to overcome sin is to be vigilant in our discernment between right and wrong. Cleaning house in the 12-Step method of recovery offers the sufferer a chance to identify patterns of sinful behavior including something called the “shame cycle.” For many of us in recovery, the drunk starts long before the first drink. In order to avoid sin, maybe the name of the game is to stay away from shame and shameful, sinful behavior.
